A tobacco pipe , often called simply a pipe , is a device specifically made to smoke tobacco. It comprises a chamber the bowl for the tobacco from which a thin hollow stem shank emerges, ending in a mouthpiece. Pipes can range from very simple machine-made briar models to highly prized hand-made artisanal implements made by renowned pipemakers, which are often very expensive collector’s items. Pipe smoking is the oldest known traditional form of tobacco smoking. Some Native American cultures smoke tobacco in ceremonial pipes , and have done so since long before the arrival of Europeans. Other American Indian cultures smoke tobacco socially. Tobacco was introduced to Europe from the Americas in the 16th century and spread around the world rapidly. As tobacco was not introduced to the Old World until the 16th century, [2] the older pipes outside of the Americas were usually used to smoke various other substances, including hashish , a rare and expensive substance outside areas of the Middle East, Central Asia and India, where it was then produced. A pipe’s fundamental function is to provide a relatively safe, manipulable volume in which to incompletely combust a smokable substance.

Results further corroborate regression dating, if it needs it, and document qualified but statistically significant correlations between dispersion and occupation span. In the process, they strengthen links between historical and prehistoric archaeology in the science of material culture. This is a preview of subscription content, log in to check access. The skill and experience of the individual undertaking the work will play a large part in determining how accurate and reliable any assessment of dating is, and specialist advice should certainly be taken when dealing with large assemblages or those where the pipe dating is fundamental to the excavated deposits. But it is certainly possible for a good assessment of date to be made by considering the key characteristics of any given pipe or pipe assemblage, guidelines for which are given below.

They can be used to indicate whether a context group is likely to contain residual material, or whether it represents a coherent and potentially tightly dated group.

I have had the idea for a long time to publish on the web a collection of articles about dating and history of brands of pipes, especially English makes. Therefore, I finally decided to start the exercise discussing the most difficult brand to date.. I say difficult and easy at the same time simply because Charatan, during its many mutations, has always left some unmistakable marks on its pipes; so unequivocal that dating does not prove a huge problem.

The difficulty, however, lies in the knowledge of the various eras, which are many and often create doubt among collectors.

This hand-crafted whistle was fashioned from the stem of a discarded clay smoking pipe. Small rustic flutes were frequently illustrated in Dutch paintings alongside depictions of clay tobacco pipes, indicating the prevalence of both of these items of material culture in the Dutch household. The deposition suggests that this flute and whistle-making custom was perhaps continued through the generations, or that the deposit was mixed with material that dated to an earlier time period.

Abstract: There are currently three formula dating techniques available to archaeologists studying 17th and 18th century sites using imported English clay tobacco pipe stems based on Harrington’s histogram of time periods; Binford’s linear formula Hanson’s formulas and the Heighton and Deagan formula. Pipe stem bore diameter data were collected from 26 sites in Maryland Virginia North Carolina and South Carolina in order to test the accuracy and utility of the three formula dating methods.

Of the formulas the Heighton and Deagan proved to be the most accurate producing formula mean dates closest to the dates assigned to the sites using other dating techniques. It was also determined that all three formula dating methods work better in Maryland and Virginia than in North and South Carolina.

For convenience, he selected a 64ths of an inch metric that became standard. Recent research using a much finer measuring increment reveals that pipe stems are capable of yielding more analytic insights than merely giving a mean date.

This paper reports some of these new findings from a range of sites including the expression of varied occupational histories, enhanced feature dating, and notable evidence about pipe stems found along the Thames foreshore in London. It also presents a new dating approach based upon the evidence from many hundreds of tobacco pipe bowls and marked stems.

This is post 4. Week four was defined not by new archaeological discoveries on the site, but by new methodological and interpretive breakthroughs. We got down almost to the bottom of the stairs this week, which is very exciting. Also, we have been informed that there are steps similar to ours in the Palmer-Marsh House, a s house located on the other side of town.

The stairs leading down into the basement kitchen of the house have wide brick steps with short wooden risers, whereas, ours would have had a short brick part and a long wooden step. The wood would have most likely been used to prevent slipping on wet brick.

Archeology and dating go hand-in-hand. Historical archeologists have an advantage when it comes to dating because of the written historical record. When we study a site, we also study the documents associated with the site. For Historical archeologists, ceramics are a diagnostic tool for dating because many English ceramic types can be dated to within 5 or so years of their manufacture.

Access to this knowledge led to something called the Mean Ceramic Date. Think about the things you own. Do you have antiques?
